Water is the most valuable resource on Earth and the most important foodstuff. In order to guarantee the supply of drinking water, a number of challenges have to be addressed in future. These include, in particular:

Global Challenges

  • Steadily increasing world population and the concomitant shortage of fresh water resources
  • Effects of climate change on water management and the supply of drinking water
 
 

Particular Challenges at the National Level

  • Necessity to address the consequences of climate change
  • Increasing nitrate pollution of groundwater
  • Hazardous substances in drinking water, for example drug residues
  • Replacement of lead pipes in old buildings
