On 4 June 2020, the kick-off meeting of the ZIM innovation network on the topic of "sewage sludge treatment" took place online. The technology and competence network has been funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy since April 1, 2020 as part of the Central Innovation Program for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, ZIM for short.

The guiding idea of the network is to consider the entire value chain of sewage sludge treatment, from phosphorus recovery, sludge water and drying and thermal treatment to the further utilization of dried sewage sludge and phosphorus recycling from sewage sludge ash.

The network serves as a platform for specialist exchange and innovation. Together with nine medium-sized network partners, the Institute of Environmental Engineering, ISA for short, and other institutes of RWTH Aachen University are developing new solutions for the upcycling of sewage sludge as a sustainable raw material as part of research and development projects. The aim is to exploit the full potential of sewage sludge.
